VT Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence
We’re proud of our space here at 208 Flynn Ave and our commitment to sustainable reconstruction and renovation of this beautiful historic building. Our space is an expression of our values that celebrate an industrial past and a modern creative aesthetic. We’re excited to be recognized by Vermont’s Governor Phil Scott as an Honorable Mention for this year’s VT Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
In 2000, Select purchased and began the process of renovating a historic 62,500 square-foot factory warehouse at 208 Flynn Ave in Burlington. With the completion of our most recent renovation project, we believe our building and many of our new processes are an example of innovative design and environmental stewardship. Select is committed to continuing to modernize our building, through energy efficiency, sustainable measures and environmentally-progressive design, while at the same time repurposing and protecting the materials and essence of this historic building.
The process is never complete, as we continue to evolve and improve the space. Here are a few examples of this evolution over the last 17 years.
In 2010, Select added a 40 kW Solar Array on the north roof of our building. At the time of installation, this was the largest array in the city of Burlington. The array generates 25-30% of our total energy needs.
In 2016, Select completed work on a 2,160 square-foot addition to the east side of our building. This project incorporated numerous innovative and sustainable measures, including a Stormwater Management System to divert stormwater and reduce the impact of runoff, with regards to erosion, flooding and pollution. The construction relies on renewable timber frame and steel, as well as high-efficiency insulation, HVAC and lighting.
In addition to the new construction, Select overhauled existing energy efficiencies throughout the historic building. Those efforts have included a complete migration to 100% LED lighting throughout our 65,000 sq-ft facility, as well as the installation of 14 Smart Thermostats from NEST throughout the building. Through monitoring, programming and improvements, Select has increased energy efficiency by 221 hrs per month during the highest need months.
One of the critical components of our architectural and interior designs is the creative re-use, repurposing and integration of reclaimed materials. During demolition, Select salvaged timber, masonry and metals that were integrated into structural, functional and aesthetic designs. This is evident throughout the building, as we have striven to incorporate historic elements of this building rather than bring in newly sourced/created materials.
As part of our overall campaign to improve efficiencies and minimize our environmental impact, Select has developed new measures for recycling and diverting waste from landfills. We now donate our damaged or imperfect goods to charities that will find new uses for them, diverting significant amounts of materials from landfills.
